Written during a relaxing day in Siem Reap Cambodia
My neighbour and I built a ghetto gym out the front of our apartment. The inspiration for this happened yesterday morning when I realised that the concrete benches in the communal seating area were perfect for doing dips. I love doing dips but there’s nowhere nearby to do them - even the open air exercise park lacks the right equipment. And all this time everything I needed was right there in front of me.
The second piece of equipment was provided by my neighbour who had a bunch of rope and a sturdy handle from a shovel. We hung it from the mango tree and now we have a place do do chin ups, pull ups, and leg raises all without needing to even leave the apartment.
Don’t think I’ve ever been able to do thirty chin ups so attempting such a number now I’m in my 40s feels like quite the challenge. However, I was inspired after watching my neighbour knock out 28 during a impromptu competition during the recent new year celebrations.
I also recently discovered that the Guinness World Record holder for the number of chin ups in 24 hours is sixty year old Graham Morgan with an impossible sounding 7481 reps. Also, the guy who did the most consecutive chin ups was 35 years old with an incredible 1224 reps. If they can do that then I’m sure I can pull off a relatively insignificant 30 reps.
I’m going cold turkey on Youtube, it just wastes too much of my time. Blocking it on the phone was the first step and that worked great, then came restricting myself to only watching in the evening and that worked OK, but it’s still too easy to get hooked in and let several hours fly past watching and endless stream of god-knows-what.
As of last night it’s been removed from my life. I’ll get to the end of this month then reassess the situation. Hopefully by then I’ll have replaced it with something more beneficial.
